Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 5S method?

5S is a Lean methodology for organizing and maintaining a workplace efficiently. It comes from five Japanese words: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), Shitsuke (Sustain). 5S originated at Toyota and is widely used in manufacturing, healthcare, offices and beyond.

What does each S stand for?

Sort: remove anything unnecessary. Set in Order: organize remaining items so anyone can find them. Shine: clean the workspace and equipment. Standardize: create visual standards for how things should be. Sustain: audit, train and continuously reinforce the program. Each S builds on the previous one.

How do you implement 5S?

Start with one area as a pilot. Walk through each S in order with the team that works there. Document the standards visually. Train every team member. Set up regular audits to sustain the program. Expand to other areas based on what you learn. 5S only works with leadership commitment to sustainment.

What is the difference between 5S and 6S?

6S adds Safety as a sixth phase - explicitly building safety into the workplace organization process. Some organizations also call this "5S + Safety." The core principles are the same; 6S simply elevates safety to be a named pillar rather than an outcome.

Why does 5S often fail?

5S fails most often because of weak Sustain - teams do the initial cleanup but don't audit or reinforce afterward. Other failure modes include leader disengagement, treating 5S as a one-time event rather than a culture, and skipping the Standardize step. Sustainment requires structure and discipline.
